3 Things We Learnt From The Rajkumar Hirani-Abhijat Joshi Masterclass For Screenwriters!

Rajkumar Hirani and Abhijat Joshi have worked together in three films - Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots and PK, all of which rewrote records globally. Their films have garnered more than ₹1200 crores. The three films have had scripts that the audience could connect to along with having a strong message to the society. Speaking at the Movie Mela, a one-day film event,on the sidelines of MAMI, Hirani and Abhijat Joshi spoke on 'How to make a Blockbuster'.

Well, here's what we learnt from the masterclass:

1. Good collaboration can work wonders

‘When you don’t think alike, you can't collaborate’. This holds true for any collaboration that takes place in the movie set. Making a film is a team effort and the same can be done only if everyone on the set is on the same page. A healthy collaboration takes a good amount of understanding to reap wonders.

2. When you are writing a script, write it only for yourself

Never try to impress the director. However meaningless it may sound, never write a scene or a story to impress the director. Renowned writer Abhijat Joshi did the same mistake when he wrote a scene for Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which director Rajkumar Hirani thought was terrible. This never happened again and the team flourished.

3. Be intriguing

Most of Rajkumar Hirani’s films are inspired by life. They do not showcase any unrealistic elements in the form of gravity defying fight scenes or obscene songs. Rajkumar Hirani picks up triggers from his life in the most unique and compelling way. Like Abhijat commented “Memory and outrage are two the two things that make a film.” Taking this into consideration, write a good log line that has the potential to attract a producer.
