Hansal Mehta's Aligarh is set to open the 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. The film tells the story of a journalist (Rajkummar Rao) investigating the story of a professor (Manoj Bajpai) who is suspended from his university for being a homosexual.
Aligarh marks the first time that a Hindi film will open the festival since 1997 - the inaugural year of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. Govind Nihalani's acclaimed feature Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa had opened the inaugural edition of this festival. Aligarh will also have its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival on Oct 4th and the European premiere at this year's BFI London Film Festival on Oct 10th.
Besides this, debutant director Nikon and Q's (Gandu, Tasher Desh) Bengali horror Ludo film will open the 'After Dark' section at the festival. The film which had its world premiere at Fantasia Film Festival 2015 is the story of four desperate teenagers who decide to spend one fateful night in a mall in Kolkata. The film which stars Rii and Tillotama Shome seems to be a marked departure from Q or Quashiq Mukherjee's earlier features which were noted for its eccentric approach and vivid style of filmmaking.
The 17th Jio MAMI Mumbai film festival which will run its course from Oct 29th to Nov 5th is poised to begin on an exciting note. And with this announcement, we can only hope for the lineup to get better.
