Very few filmmakers arouse the kind of intense passion that Anurag Kashyap does. Very few still, have the kind of fan following he has. A certain breed of young, male, north Indian viewer finds him one amongst themselves. His films, dark, gritty & violent, with the language of the streets found ready acceptance in this audience. The actors he cast & his very public profile as a messiah of sorts for young filmmakers, provided him with a street cred that others could only aspire too.
That is probably what went against him in Bombay Velvet. Fans were probably disappointed with his choice of mainstream actors (and Karan Johar) as they were with his theme - a love story set in Bombay of the 60's - and it's elite setting.
Not one to sulk, he's back with his next feature & it's already making news. Raman Raghav 2.0 is set to premiere at the Directors' Fortnight section in Cannes this year. Starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui & Vicky Kaushal, the film is based on the notorious serial killer of the 70's, Raman Raghav, but is not a period film. Trust Kashyap to twist an already twisted tale, the film doesn't seem to be a straightforward retelling of the killers story but we will have to wait for the film to know exactly how it differs.
Phantom just launched the teaser-poster of the film & it's got blood on it. His fans are sure to love this, as the film seems closer to the kind of films they've grown to expect of him.
What do you think of the poster?
