What does an editor do? What do you mean when you say the film is well-edited?
I have always been confounded by people who claim to understand that. Unlike other crafts involved in filmmaking, editing isn't meant to pull attention to itself. If it does, it distracts from the story & that's not good editing. For me, anytime I am lost in the film, not thinking about how they did it OR what went into the making of the film, it's well edited.
So what does an editor do? And what is he/ she thinking about when cutting the film? Or are they thinking at all? This lovely video essay by Every Frame A Painting, beautifully explains what editing entails.
And for those who've just started editing, this video is a more than useful primer. Simple & effective advice from legends like Walter Murch, Thelma Schoonmaker & Michael Kahn will let you in on their secrets.
Without wasting any more time, here's the video.
