National Award-winning director Gurvinder Singh's Chauthi Koot just released the first trailer and it is gripping (below). Based on writer Waryam Singh Sandhu's collection of short stories of the same name and set in militancy-era Punjab, the film was shot in Amritsar and Ferozepur and does not feature any professional actors. The film explores the dilemma of the common man trapped between excesses of the military on one side and terrorists on the other, leading to an atmosphere of suspicion, fear and paranoia. Gurvinder Singh previously directed the acclaimed Anhey Ghorey Da Daan, which bagged him two National Film Awards- Best Punjabi Film and Best Director, respectively.
Chauthi Koot is one of the two Indian films that will play at this year's Cannes Un Certain Regard section; Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan (Fly Away Solo) being the other one .
The Un Certain Regard section runs parallel to the main competition section and showcases works that are typically first or second works of the director. Several Indian films have been featured here over the years including Mani Kaul’s Satah Se Uthata Aadmi Adoor Gopalakrishnan’s Elippathayam, Mrinal Sen’s Khandar, Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay, Vikramaditya Motwane’s Udaan & Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely. The 68th Cannes Film Festival will take place from 13-24 May this year.
