Ruchika Oberoi's Island City which was recently premiered at this year's Venice Film Festival has won the Fedeora Award for best director of a debut film at Venice Days - the sidebar of the Venice Film Festival.
The film which narrates 3 separate stories set in the city of Mumbai is another glorious addition to a long list of Indian films such as Court, Labour Of Love and Killa that have previously won at prestigious international festivals. Previously, this year saw Neeraj Ghaywan's Masaan win the FIPRESCI at Cannes and Raam Reddy's Thithi win the Golden Leopard at Locarno.
Besides this, Vetrimaaran's Visaranai (The Investigation) has won the Amnesty International Italy’s ‘Cinema for Human Rights’ award at this year's Venice Film Festival. The film which was also nominated for the Orizonti section of the festival is a gritty prison drama that features Attakathi Dinesh Anandhi and Samuthirakani among others. The film is produced by Vetrimaaran and actor Dhanush who had previously produced Kaaka Muttai which was premiered at last year's Toronto International Film Festival.
