Before they hit the big league and became two of most known faces of the new age Hindi cinema, Irrfan Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui acted together in the award winning short film Bypass. The film directed by Amit Kumar is a tale of two violent muggers (Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sundar Dan Detha) who encounter a corrupt cop (Irrfan Khan). But unknown to them, some unforeseen events are taking place around them.
Shot in the desolate and scorching locations of Rajasthan, the film is gritty and is unpredictable till the last minute. Interestingly the film is devoid of dialogues and has a background score that is minimalistic in nature. Yet it leaves a profound impact due to its grey characters and a depiction of the unforgiving ways of the desert life.
A few years ago Amit Kumar directed his debut feature Monsoon Shootout which starred Nawazuddin Siddiqui and was screened at Cannes and Sydney Film Festival. Sadly the film is yet to get a theatrical release in India.
While we wait for the film to release, you can watch this impressive short by Kumar which suggests he is a director to watch out for. And also because this also is one of the rare occasions when Irrfan and Nawaz came together years before their much acclaimed The Lunchbox.
