We discovered this amazing tribute video online that has some of the most stunning shots of Lubezki set to beautiful music. Lubezki, who's now won two Oscar's back to back, is one of the best cinematographers around, if not the best. We recently did a piece on lessons filmmakers could draw from his work.
While his collaboration with Cuaron (Gravity, A Little Princess, Great Expectations, Y tú Mamá También, Children of Men) is well-known, the video also includes shots from his films with Terrence Malick (The Tree Of Life, the New World, Knight Of Cups & To The Wonder), Tim Burton (Sleepy Hollow), Michael Mann (Ali) and this year's Oscar winner 'Birdman' with Iñarritu.
Video essays like this highlight the cinematic abilities of filmmakers and capture the nuances of their filmmaking style. This video essay on the sounds of Tarantino and these essays on the use of colour in the films of Kubrick and Wes Anderson are cases in point. It would be interesting to see something like this in the Indian context. We hope someone takes heed and does a video essay on say a Mani Ratnam or Vishal Bharadwaj or Anurag Kashyap. Now that, would be worth watching.
